Public Funding for Abortion
On January 22, 1973, a historic
Supreme Court decision named Roe v. Wade was passed in United
States of America that legalized abortion for all women
specifically the poor women.
Medicaid, a joint federal state program has enabled poor
women to get their fundamental right to abortion. Medicaid is
the largest health care program in United States that had paid
public funding of abortion and contributed one third of all the
funds to abortion cases in the country.

After three years time period, Congress party banned Medicaid to
utilize federal funds for abortion services. These amendments
were made by Henry Hyde and named Hyde amendments. It was made
effective in 1977, notifying the sort of abortion services to be
covered under Medicaid. These modifications were reviewed yearly
by Congress, still disallowing the programs for providing funds
for abortions except for certain cases. This provision was
passed in September 1993 that offered funds to those women
suffering their life in threat, raped, incest or facing
endangerment of physical health.
In 2001, statistics shows that both the federal and state
Medicaid had funded only 81 abortion cases. In America, 17
states are not following the Hyde amendments. These states grant
their own funds to solve necessary abortion cases. This depicts
that due to insufficient income, the poor women of USA are
refused to get the rights to abortion.
In 1983, AGI had conducted an interview from Medicaid patients
that gone through abortion. They observed that those women faced
great sacrifices in assembling the money for abortion. They had
to give up with their daily expenses. A number of women were
founded pawning domestic goods. Some even got involved in
criminal activities such as stealing and robbery. The research
came across the fact that about 60% women experienced severe
hardship for paying for their abortion.
