How to Write a
Bibliography
A bibliography is an alphabetical
list of all resources and material that is used in preparation
of your assignment. An annotated bibliography is the
alphabetical list of articles and resources for which you have
added significant and descriptive notes too. Bibliography is of
prime importance and is a way to acknowledge and give
recognition to the sources of diagrams, words or any ideas that
is used by a writer. The prime objective of bibliography is that
readers can check author’s resources for accuracy. An honest
bibliography can boost reader’s confidence in author’s writing.
Bibliography must include author, title, place of publication,
publisher, date of publication and page numbers for articles
from periodicals, newspapers, encyclopedias, magazines and
journals etc. Following are the writing formats of different
elements of bibliography, to eradicate all your confusions
regarding how to write a bibliography.
1 AUTHOR:
While mentioning the name of author, ignore all titles and
degrees which are attached before or after the name. You can
include Jr. and Sr. But rest like Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Honorable
etc should be neglected while writing name of the author in
bibliography.
Different formats of writing author names are as follow:
a) Last name, initials:
E.g. Mark, F.A.
b) Last name, first and middle names, Jr. or Sr. designation:
E.g. David, Peter Oliver, Jr.
c) Last name, first name, I, II, III, etc.:
E.g. Stanford, Wilson E., IV.
d) Last name, first name:
E.g. Mary- John, Anthony.
2 TITLES AND SUBTITLE:
a) In most of the cases the title on the front cover of the book
is different from that on the title page. In such case, you can
use the title on the title page for your citation.
b) You must underline the title and subtitle of a book,
magazine, journal, periodical, newspaper, or encyclopedia, etc
c) Never underline the title and subtitles of articles from
magazine, journal, periodical, newspaper, or encyclopedia. Put
the title and subtitle between quotation marks.
d) Use lower case letters for conjunctions such as and, because
etc. For articles like a, an and the, use lower case unless they
occur at the beginning of the title. ,
e) Capitalize first word of title, subtitle as well as all
important words in a title.
3 PLACE OF PUBLICATION:
Do not use the name of country for the place of publication. You
can use the name of city and town for the place of publication.
If city is well known it is not necessary to add the name of
province with it.
4 PUBLISHERS:
Always mention the name of a publisher not a printer. If you do
not find the name of publishers anywhere in the book then write
n.p.
5 DATE OF PUBLICATION:
Use copyright year as date of publication.
6 PAGE NUMBERS:
Page numbers are not needed unless the article comes from
anthology a collection of work by different authors.
Best of luck for writing an impressive bibliography for your
