Physics depicts every action and
the event is the consequence of universal casual laws. It means
that every event that has to happen thus the person who performs
the particular action is not responsible for doing so. This
determinism is a blow to religion, and moral responsibility of
the men. According to this concept, the God Himself is
responsible for our sins.
But this concept is not true. According to Kant, we belong to a
world of cause and effect. Every action has a cause that
necessitated it, and that cause has a cause so on till infinity.
We can determine ourselves in accordance with self-imposed
dictates of reason, and hence achieves autonomy. Insofar as we
enjoy autonomy we are free beings and possess a worth and
dignity that set us apart from the realm of necessity.
John Stuart Mill also presented some arguments on the full
authorship of one’s action. He called it individuality. He said
that men chooses his plan of life for him, employs all his
faculties. He must use observation to see reasoning and judgment
to foresee, activity to gather material for decision,
discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and
self-control to hold his decision. And these qualities he
requires and exercises exactly in proportion as the part of his
conduct, which he determines according to his own judgment.
Hence it can be said that autonomy incorporates Aristotelian
self-moving but goes beyond it. A self-mover can be a
participant of a long parade who does not care where he is
headed as he ends up in the same place as all the others. The
autonomous individual is not content to leave the course of the
march to the determination of others. An autonomous person
acknowledges the personal responsibility of all his deeds.
Hence it can be said easily that it is man rather than God, who
is responsible for all of his sins and good deeds.
