Research Paper - Manifest Destiny

Manifest Destiny was an expression used by leaders and politicians in the 1840s to clarify continental growth by the United States. It revived a sense of "mission" or national destiny for Americans. The people of the United States believed it was their duty to extend the "boundaries of freedom" to others by communicating their idealism and conviction in democratic institutions to those who were competent of self-government. It barred those people who were supposed as being inept in self-government, such as Native American people and those of non-European origin.

 
However, there were other forces and political plans at worked as well. As the population of the original 13 Colonies increased and the U.S. economy developed, the need and efforts to spread out into new land increased. For many colonists, land symbolized prospective income, capital, independence and freedom. Expansion into the western frontiers presented chances for self-advancement.

While the United States put into motion, a mission for its Manifest Destiny, Mexico dealt with quite diverse situation as a recently independent country. Mexico accomplished its independence from Spain in 1821, but the country endured terribly from the effort. The war triggered severe economic problems and revival was difficult. The new nation's first endeavor at creating a new government included placing the country under the rule of an emperor. In 1824, the kingdom was brought down and a constitutional republic was created. However, inner struggles between the different political groups, such as the Centralist, Federalist, Monarchist and Republican parties, exhausted even more of the country's power and resources. These political factions were not unified and new tussle broke out by the different sides as each tried to secure dominant rule.
