Essays - Smoking in Public Places
It may take a while, but one day
it will be unlawful to do anything in public except breathe, and
that is only if you did not have onions for lunch. The action to
make smoking illegitimate in public places is not unexpected. It
ensues the general motif that some people have been pushing for
the last many years, that we know what is legitimate for you and
we do not care if you agree with us or not. The general debate
is as follows, you should not be allowed to smoke in public in
view of the fact that passive smoke is more hazardous than
actually smoking, and you are compromising the lives of people
who do not wish to be laid open to smoke.
I will admit that smoking is bad for one's health and being
around smoke in huge amounts has numerous repugnant effects.
Nevertheless the larger point is that people should be able to
smoke in public places in view of the fact that it is a choice
that they make. The right to be free from smoke has no greater
importance or significance than the right to smoke in public. If
you do not want to be in smoke-filled surroundings, go down the
street to the smoke-free restaurant.

Although I give credence to solidly in allowing owners to
resolve their smoking policies, I do not believe this standard
should be put to use to all public venues. The town courthouse
can ban smoking on account of the fact it is sustained with
public money and people are often required to go there. Smokers
perceive they have the right to smoke any time and any place
they decide on. They feel that they are only hurting themselves.
But the augmenting indication that side-stream smoke is posing a
health warning to the people enclosing the smoker has uncovered
up a whole new debate and conflict. To a large degree, society
instructs the way its members should and should not act. In
fact, cigarette smoking got its start due to the likely health
danger faced by society from the prior use of tobacco for
chewing. Tobacco chewing was a common practice of men in the
late nineteenth century. Spitting, due to the extreme saliva
produced while chewing tobacco, was then carefully thought about
as acceptable behavior. Spittoons were general in homes,
businesses and public gathering places. When it was comprehended
that the spitting was liable for the diffusion of the germs that
caused tuberculosis, society’s acceptance of spitting in public
was reconsidered.
Smokers are beginning to encounter this same response from
family, friends, employers and anyone else with whom they come
in contact. They are not welcome as long as they have a lit
cigarette, cigar or pipe in their ownership. If you do not
desire to get socially abandoned due to the persistence of a
dirty and abject form of drug addiction, do not smoke nicotine.
You will be at liberty to go anywhere, any time, sans agonizing
in regard to whether you have cigarettes and will be allowed to
smoke them. Life becomes much clearer once you break free from
this abhorrent obsession. Protection from passive smoking is
above all a matter of health. For more than a decade, persuasive
scientific evidence has been accessible to show that exposure to
passive smoke both harms health, and degenerate present health
problems. A series of expert scientific reports has assessed and
estimated the studies obtainable, and concluded that passive
smoking harm health.

The single most potent procedure for an international law is a
limitation on smoking in all places where people gather,
wherever they come together for work, play or relaxation.
Children and non-smokers would be preserved. Lesser people would
be encouraged to start smoking. In this way restrictions on
smoking would make smokers smoke fewer cigarettes. The tobacco
companies dread this action more than any other, assessing by
their reaction against endeavors to dislodge tobacco from the
social scene, as it very much endanger their endurance. Tobacco
is an insidious global plague, which needs a global solution. In
the 19th century we eradicated the issue of slavery. In the 21st
century the world has to counter a new formidable task, which is
to abolish slavery to tobacco.
