Asian American Issue
My experiences have a very hard
tone when I consider issues concerning Asian Americans. For
quite sometime I have hold on to the opinion that a person born
in a particular culture never gives up on the values and norms
that encompass it. And that is due to some very solid reasons. I
have seen many immigrant Asian families who bring along with
them their eastern customs and traditions. They adapt to our
system of openness and freedom of mind and thought, but they
seldom gives up their old habits. One such is the issue of their
children, brought up in the free environment of our society,
they seldom tries to cater to their parent’s cultural ties.

Special problem arises when these offspring intends to marry.
The question of religion comes first, and then the family
background comes to picture. But this new sandwich generation
does not care about the traditions of their ancestors as they
are born and brought up in the individualist societal system.
Their parents worry about their future as have been observed.
Many examples can be quoted in this regard, where the family
does not approve of the marriage and the children go against
their wishes taking bold steps. One such example is of my
classmate, (cannot give the name), who got involved with a
Christian, her being the Muslim. When her father and brother
came to know about it, they physically abused and beaten her.
She then called the police and sent them to jail and married
that guy. We are all aware of what sort of a disposable society
we have. We use one thing and throw it away. Same thing happened
with her. She got fed up with her husband’s inactive and
unemployed state and left him. For people from her community,
she is a stigma, so she cannot go back to them.
This is the main reason why many parents, especially from
central Asian region, when settles in America are very
conservative and narrow minded when it comes to their children,
especially girls, as they become overprotected. And in the quest
of protecting their girls, they tend to arrange their marriage
without their knowledge, take them to their native country, and
get them married over their without their consent, deprive them
of their passports, so they may not return. Some times they do
get out of this boogie trap by informing the embassies.
This freedom kill may not occur at all if those culture bound
people would not dare to come to America for prosperous future.
And if they have, they must come to terms with our culture and
society. Only in this way they may not be tormented by their
children’s future and would not try to run away after their
children have grown up.
